Wombat Rescue Close

The long search for a place to establish a second wild population of the critically endangered Northern Hairy-nosed Wombat is very close to a successful conclusion...

The elusive Bristlebird

According to the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service, the Northern Hairy-nosed Wombat team has found a place to establish a second wild population of this critically endangered mammal.

After a year of searching, a suitable site in south-western Queensland has been found.  The next hurdle is to find the money and support to undertake the reintroduction.

The Northern Hairy-nosed Wombat is Australia’s second most endangered mammal.
One colony of fewer than 130 wombats is all that now exists, although in days gone by these animals were much more wide spread.

FAME recognises that this unique animal is in extreme danger of extinction, and has agreed to help Queensland Parks and Wildlife and the Wombat Foundation support the establishment of a second colony.

Much work has already been done with the existing colony, including the installation of predator-proof fencing and feed stations to help the wombats get through the recent drought.  The next step will be to make the new wombat site safe, and move some of the healthy animals to their new home.  The existence of two breeding colonies will make the future of the Northern Hairy-nosed Wombat much more secure.

You can help FAME and the Wombat Foundation save the Northern Hairy-nosed Wombat.  Make a donation via our secure site, or email fame@fame.org.au for more information.
